What even is health anyway?

So what is health? I've been doing through this whole fitness/health transformation but I didn't really consider what Health even was. Do other people have this thought too? I decided that I'd just walk around and ask people what they think of health as a survey of sorts.

So what is health? I've been doing through this whole fitness/health transformation but I didn't really consider what Health even was. Do other people have this thought too? I decided that I'd just walk around and ask people what they think of health as a survey of sorts.

The Survey

Don't get me wrong this survey is not scientific in any way. Not that social sciences are very scientific to begin with. (Don't get be started down that rabbit hole.) The goal was simple I had a few questions that I wanted to ask and get opinions on. Being a flawed human kinda messed up this part since I didn't ask everyone all the questions and a few people I left questions out. Just so you have them I'll put them below.

  1. What does health mean to you?
  2. What would you consider to be optimal health?
  3. Do you consider yourself to be in your optimal health?
  4. What is the biggest obstacle to optimal health you are experiencing right now?
  5. Where would the biggest improvement to your health come from if you could flip a switch and make that change?

You can probably tell a couple of these got left off. *Note to self... make sure to write these down and have them handy next time. Live and learn. Regardless I think we got some pretty interesting results.

Location, Location, Location

For those of you in the know about weather patterns in the Kansas City area you are probably aware of the temperamental weather we get here. This was filmed in Late November/Early December and it was randomly 60°F. The day before and the day after were in the teens. So I took my opportunity and went to a nearby shopping center. It is ripe for the picking with lots of potential surveyees.

The Takeaways

First of all... Thanks to all my willing participants. I hope you found this as enlightening as I have. I was somewhat surprised at the number of people who were concerned with Mental Health as much or more than Physical Health. Granted that was definitely in the younger crowd but still was noticable.

Of the people who targeted Physical Health in their answers it seemed that food was the biggest factor in their mind. I happen to agree with that position when it comes to health. Food is number one. "You are what you eat" is likely something your mother told you as a kid. She is right.

Takeaways for me would be to hire a better camera man. Jk Jk. You get what you pay for and in my case my free cameraman (my dad) did fine. But bringing a nicer camera next time might be the move. The DJI Osmo Action 3 did pretty well though so we'll see. Also being more prepared with the questions would probably help to get more of an idea to the overall topic.

Where do we go next?

I think this experience was pretty fun. I will definitely be doing it again. I am thinking next time I will go somewhere with the food that people were so concerned with. I'd be interested to see what the shoppers of Unnamed Big Blue Store, Unnamed Big Red Store and a Farmer's Market would think. Does your view of health dictate or influence the choice in store you go to get your food? Let me know in the video comments if you'd like to see that. Merry Christmas to all of you out there!
